Can polyester color masterbatch and polypropylene color masterbatch be used interchangeably? What are the differences?

The carrier systems are different.

Generally, it is not recommended to use polyester color masterbatch and polypropylene color masterbatch interchangeably. The most significant difference lies in the carrier resins. polyester color masterbatch uses polyester-based carriers, which have a similar molecular structure to the polyester substrate and good compatibility, matching the melting temperature of polyester processing conditions. Polypropylene color masterbatch uses polypropylene as the carrier, which is suitable for the melting characteristics of polypropylene.

If mixed across materials, the compatibility between the carrier and the substrate is poor, resulting in poor dispersion, causing color spots and stripes, and also affecting the melt flowability, causing filament breakage during spinning and surface defects of the products. The thermal tolerance ranges of the two carriers are different, and during processing, problems such as carrier decomposition and precipitation may occur, affecting the production stability.

Differences in additives and applications

Apart from the carrier, the selection of color powder, dispersants, and various functional additives also varies. For polyester processing, the color components in the color masterbatch need to have better heat resistance and should not change color or decompose at high temperatures; for polypropylene processing, the processing temperature is relatively mild, but polypropylene has a relatively inert structure, making coloring more difficult, and the dispersion system requires strict requirements. Many pigments suitable for polyester are difficult to uniformly disperse in the polypropylene system.

The downstream scenarios that these two can be used in are also different. Polyester color masterbatch is mostly used in spinning, films, and injection molding products, with a larger selection of color fastness; polypropylene color masterbatch is often used in non-woven fabrics, ropes, webbing, and short fiber products, and the formulation needs to take into account the compatibility with spinning oil agents to avoid reactions with the oil agents, causing color spots and abnormal adhesion.

Some pigment categories can be shared, but the corresponding carriers and dispersion systems cannot be interchanged. During procurement and pilot production, they should be selected separately based on the substrate, and direct mixing should not be done. If a material switch is needed, a small-scale trial should be conducted first to observe the coloring effect, melt state, and whether the subsequent processing is normal. Reasonably selecting the corresponding system color masterbatch can reduce color differences and defects, and ensure smooth production.
