Non-woven fabric color masterbatchprocurement guide: From color confirmation to machine verification

Non-woven fabric color masterbatches are widely used for coloring in processes such as PP spunbonding, meltblown, and waterjetting. In response to different color requirements and functions, how can one efficiently complete the selection and procurement process? Below, we will outline several key steps.

Step 1: Clearly define the process and the substrate, and achieve precise matching.

The production of non-woven fabric is fast and has high filtration accuracy. Choosing the wrong color masterbatch may result in clogged nets, color spots or broken threads.

Confirm the process type: is it spunbond, meltblown or needling? High-speed spunbonding requires higher dispersion and heat resistance of the masterbatch; meltblown fabric, due to its small filtration fineness, needs the pigment particle size in the masterbatch to be finer and without large particle agglomerations, in order to reduce the risk of clogging the mesh.

Base material matching: It is clear that the base material of the non-woven fabric is PP (polypropylene). The carrier resin of the masterbatch should be compatible with the base material, which is the basis for reducing filament breakage and avoiding crystal points.

Final application: When used for Yaskawa (diapers, sanitary pads), the safety and skin irritation of the masterbatch need to be paid attention to; when used for agricultural or outdoor non-woven fabrics, it is recommended to compound with anti-aging masterbatch; when used for flame-retardant non-woven fabrics, the flame-retardant masterbatch can be directly selected.

Step 2: Confirm the color and functional requirements

Color accuracy and batch stability are the core aspects of color masterbatches. The following measures can help reduce subsequent problems:

Provide standard samples: Preferably provide physical color charts or Pantone numbers. The supplier will match the colors based on these and send back small samples for confirmation. For light color ranges (such as beige, light pink), the color difference control between batches of the masterbatch is more demanding. It is possible to request the supplier to provide color charts for three consecutive batches for comparison.

Clarify functional requirements: If you need anti-static, flame retardant, hydrophilic, or anti-aging functions, you can all mention them at the same time. Functional masterbatches can impart additional properties to the non-woven fabric while coloring, reducing the need for subsequent spraying processes. Note: Some functional masterbatches may affect color or dispersion. It is recommended to conduct sample testing first.

Inform about the addition ratio: The amount of masterbatch required varies for different color systems (dark colors usually require a higher amount than light colors). The supplier should provide the recommended addition quantity and the expected impact on the spinning process (such as filtration pressure, component replacement cycle).

Sample testing suggestions: Before batch production, it is recommended to request samples produced recently and conduct a small-scale test on your production line. This is a reliable way to verify the dispersion effect, color accuracy, and the impact on filtration pressure. Pay attention to observing whether there are color spots or color threads on the fabric surface, as well as the residues on the filter screen after long-term operation.

Summary and Selection Suggestions

When purchasing Non-woven fabric color masterbatches, it is recommended to communicate in the following order:

Let's start with the process and the substrate: are you using spunbonding, meltblown, or needling? Let the supplier know your spinning temperature and filtration accuracy, so that they can match the temperature resistance grade and dispersion fineness.

Please also provide the color samples and functional requirements: At the same time, clarify whether additional functions such as anti-aging, flame retardancy, hydrophilicity, etc. are needed.

Final on-site trial: After confirming that the sample performs as expected (in terms of color, dispersion, and the rate of pressure increase during filtration) at your site, then proceed to increase the order quantity.
